Mike Marshall hit World Series HR, saw 11 majors seasons
Orel Hershiser did his job on the mound in Game 2 of the 1988 World Series and Mike Marshall helped seal the win.
Marshall hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to push the score to 5-0 in the eventual 6-0 Dodgers win, The Associated Press wrote.
"I was just trying to make contact," Marshall told The AP afterward. "The ball jumped and it was all over."
Marshall hit that World Series home run in his eighth season in the majors. He went on to see 11. Along the way, he made the 1984 National League All-Star team.
Marshall's career began in 1978, taken by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the draft out of Buffalo Grove High School in Illinois.
Marshall started with the Dodgers at rookie Lethbridge. He made AA San Antonio for 1980, then AAA Albuquerque and Los Angeles for 1981.
He saw 14 games with the Dodgers that first year and 49 in 1982. He then became a regular in 1983, getting into 140. He hit .284.
He then made the all-star team in 1984. He helped his cause in a game that April, picking up five hits, two of them home runs, after a slow week, UPI wrote.
"I don't think I ever had a day like this, ever," Marshall told UPI afterward. "It was very satisfying. It's been a week of frustration."
Marshall continued with the Dodgers through 1989. He hit .294 in 1987, after asking to be traded. By July, though, he wanted to stay.
"I'm very, very happy in L.A.," Marshall told The Associated Press then. "I don't want to play anywhere else."
He moved to the Mets and Red Sox for 1990. He also saw AAA Pawtucket with the Red Sox.
He then saw 24 final major league games in 1991 with the Red Sox and Angels. He played 1992 in Japan with Nippon Ham. He's later credited with 33 games with independent Schaumburg in 1999.
