Cesar Bernhardt was early prospect, saw 9 minors seasons

When The Chicago Tribune went down its list of White Sox prospects in 1989, there on the list was single-A South Bend infielder Cesar Bernhardt . He'd hit .375 that July for single-A South Bend. His size, 5 feet, 9 inches and 150 pounds, also brought images of diminutive 5-foot, 10-inch and 160-pound Hall of Famer Nellie Fox to mind, The Tribune wrote . Size, however, would ultimately be the only comparison between Bernhardt and the Hall of Famer. Bernhardt's career would span eight professional seasons . But he would never make the majors. Bernhardt's career began in 1986, signing with the White Sox when he was just 17. He also joined the team that his father scouted for. His father was White Sox scout Juan Bernhardt, The Tribune wrote . Bernhardt started that first year at rookie league in the Gulf Coast League hitting .184. Wally Heckel helped St. John's, made two pro seasons

St. John's University was looking to advance in the 1988 Big East Tournament and Wally Heckel helped them do that, according to The Associated Press . Hitting against Seton Hall, Heckel picked up three hits, including a home run, helping his team to a 6-2 victory . Heckel's performance that year got the notice of scouts for the Blue Jays , the team taking him way down in the 65th round of the draft that year. Heckel instead stayed in school, but the Blue Jays didn't forget him. A year later, Heckel had improved his draft stock considerably, the Blue Jays taking him in the 12th round . Heckel is also credited by his full name, Walter Heckel. As a pro, though, Heckel couldn't show that same improvement. His professional career ended up consisting of just two seasons . Johnny Lipon felt good and enjoyed the game over five decades as player, then manager

Johnny Lipon had more than 2,100 victories as a manager by the start of 1992, all but a few of those in the minors - but some in the majors, The Detroit Free Press wrote . He'd counted such players influenced along the way as Tommy John, Luis Tiant and Bobby Bonilla, The Free Press wrote . "I've had some good clubs and a lot of good players over the years," Lipon told The Free Press as he started his fifth season helming the Tigers' entry at high-A Lakeland. "I've been toiling from year to year, but the big thing is that I still feel good and enjoy the game." Lipon's enjoyment of the game as a professional began as a player himself in 1941. He eventually saw parts of nine seasons in the majors, even as he spent three years in the military during World War II. It was July 1998 and Horne was playing for the AA Arkansas Travelers, the team visiting San Antonio. He was also having a good year. But maybe he just needed a day off to get himself well again. Then he got to the ballpark and he changed his mind. "I thought, 'you know what? Screw it,'" Horne recalled to The Greatest 21 Days recently. "'I'm going to go ahead and play." He did play. Pat Daugherty became Iowa college legend, later scouted

When Pat Daugherty arrived on the campus of Indian Hills Community College in Iowa in 1965 to coach the school's baseball team, he set out to build a winner. But first, he had to build a field, according to The Ottumwa Courier . "We got the materials and built the field ourselves," Daugherty recalled to The Courier years later. "I dug the field with my own car and when we got the school tractor, I'd mow the field myself. It was a one-man job. You spend a lot of hours, a lot of enjoyable hours, and do a lot of work." Daugherty took over the four-year-old program and, over 17 seasons, built it to national prominence, taking it to two Junior College World Series .
