Kevin Uhrhan pitched well in starting, relief, made AA
Reliever Kevin Uhrhan made the spot start for his Elmira Pioneers in August 1989 - his first professional start - and he turned in a performance that saw him strike out 10 and take the win, The Elmira Star-Gazette wrote.
"It was a great effort," Uhrhan's manager Mike Verdi told The Star-Gazette afterward, "all year he's went one or two innings and he went out and gave me six good innings."
Uhrhan gave that performance in his first season as a pro. He went on to see five in all. He topped out at AA.
Uhrhan's career began that year in 1989, signed by the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Missouri.
At Missouri, Urhan helped stop a rally in a May 1988 game, coming in and getting a fly out, The Columbia Missourian wrote.
"I just went after him with my fastball, Uhrhan told The Missourian.
Uhrhan started with the Red Sox at short-season Elmira. He went 2-1 over 19 outings, two starts, with a 5.17 ERA.
He moved to high-A Lynchburg for 1990 and 1991. He had a 4.21 ERA his first year there and 2.91 ERA in his second.
Uhrhan made AA New Britain for 1992. He saw 43 outings, three starts. He went 3-5, with a 4.20 ERA. He then returned there for 1993, but saw just nine outings. He gave up 12 earned in 9.1 innings of work to end his career.
Uhrhan has since gone on to stay in sports. He was a pro bat sales representative for Louisville Slugger, taking calls during the early 2025 torpedo bat hype.
