David Schmidt swung the bat over 4 seasons, saw high-A
The Lynchburg Red Sox had a big start to this April 1993 game, including a two-run home run from catcher David Schmidt, The Lynchburg News and Advance wrote.
But the opposing team had as big of start and more, and their relievers kept Lynchburg in check the rest of the way, The News and Advance wrote.
"They did," Schmidt told The News and Advance afterward of the relievers. "But we swung the bats well in the first few innings. After that, I guess we went cold."
Schmidt swung the bat then in his fourth pro season. That season ended up being abbreviated, six games - and his last season as a pro. He topped out at high-A.
Schmidt's career began in 1990, taken by the Red Sox in the 12th round of the draft out of Southwestern College in California.
At Southwestern, Schmidt went 8 for 10 in an April 1990 tournament.
He started with the Red Sox in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He saw 50 games and hit .322.
Schmidt then moved to high-A Winter Haven for 1991. He got into 63 and hit .175. He then returned to Winter Haven for 1992. He saw 110 games, hit .220 with two home runs.
Schmidt arrived at Lynchburg to start 1993. He hit his second home run in an early May game. But he got three hits overall in 19 at bats in six games. Shortly after, he was released, ending his career.
