Bruce Chick saw competition over six seasons, made AAA

In the midst of his second pro season in July 1991, Bruce Chick talked his prospects with his hometown Tampa Tribune

"I don't know if I'm a Triple-A prospect, much less a major-league prospect, because I haven't seen that competition yet," Chick told The Tribune then. "I know I love what I'm doing; it's my career choice, and I'm in it until someone tells me otherwise."

Chick was then playing at high-A Lynchburg. He eventually did get to see AAA competition two seasons later. But, in a career that spanned six campaigns, he never saw the majors.

Chick's career began in 1990, taken by the Red Sox in the 15th round of the draft out of the University of Georgia. He played his high school ball in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Chick started with the Red Sox in the rookie Gulf Coast League and at high-A Winter Haven. He saw 61 games between them and hit .267.

That August, he spoke to The Tribune about adjusting to the minors.

"It's really different than what I've kind of become used to," Chick told The Tribune. "I mean, the other night we had a game, and we were losing 3-0 and the bases were loaded and we didn't score."

Chick played 1991 at high-A Lynchburg. He hit .271 in 134 games. He made AA New Britain in 1992 and hit .220 in 128 games.

For 1993, Chick got a glimpse at AAA Pawtucket, 29 games. He hit .305. He also saw New Britain and high-A Fort Lauderdale that year.

He started 1994 at New Britain, but soon moved to the Rockies and high-A Central Valley and AA New Haven.

He signed with the Expos for 1995, but lost time due to a shoulder injury. "I hope to be back soon," Chick told The Tribune that June, "but sitting out such long time is so frustrating."

Chick ended up seeing 30 games that year, including 12 at AA Harrisburg. That season marked his last as a pro.
