Todd Miller saw 4 seasons, career as high school coach
After blowing out his shoulder his first season as a pro and returning, Todd Miller faced recovery from a second arm operation in 1994, his hometown Allentown Morning Call wrote.
Miller was just hoping to get back.
"All I want is one more opportunity to pitch with a healthy arm," Miller told The Morning Call that May. "I've put up some decent numbers so far but they don't do me any good if I can't stay healthy."
Miller had seen time by that point in four seasons, two spent at high-A. After that second operation, though, he never got back.
Miller's career began in 1990, taken by the Red Sox in the seventh round of the draft out of Temple University.
Miller's work at Temple, with a fastball in the mid-80s, caught scouts' eyes, The Morning Call wrote after he was drafted.
"I knew I was going to get drafted,," Miller told The Morning Call then. "I just didn't know where."
Miller started with the Red Sox between the rookie Gulf Coast League and high-A Winter Haven. He saw four outings total.
He then saw 11 outings, four starts in 1991 at short-season Elmira. He went 2-0, with a 4.50 ERA.
For 1992, he returned to Winter Haven and saw 29 relief appearances. He went 3-5, with a 2.53 ERA. Then came his 1993 campaign, spent at high-A Lynchburg. That season turned out to be his last as a pro.
Miller soon returned home to Pennsylvania and became a high school coach. His 2026 season marked his 28th campaign leading Southern Lehigh High School.
Upon taking the job in 1999, Miller told The Morning Call how he stressed the mental part of the game.
"That's the first thing I told the kids - to be mentally tough," Miller told The Morning Call. "That's important to the game and I challenge the kids every game."
In April 2026, he won his 400th career game.
