Ryan Maloney took pro opportunity to 4 seasons, high-A
Lancaster High School product Ryan Maloney wasn't expecting the draft call, but he got it, The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette wrote.
But he got it. Through his mom, he told The Eagle-Gazette then.
"I was surprised because I didn't hear it through a scout," Maloney told The Eagle-Gazette wrote. "I heard it through my mom. She told me (Wednesday) morning that I was drafted."
Maloney went on from there to play four seasons, first in the Red Sox system and then briefly Montreal's. He topped out at high-A.
"Playing pro ball has been a dream of mine ever since I knew what baseball was," Maloney told The Eagle-Gazette after signing days later. "I had the opportunity to play and I took that opportunity."
His career began that year in 1990, taken by the Red Sox in the 23rd round of the draft out of Lancaster High School in Ohio.
Maloney started with the Red Sox in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He saw 17 outings, 8 starts. He went 7-0, with a 2.26 ERA.
He returned to the GCL and saw high-A Winter Haven for 1991. Overall, he went 2-5, with a 4.19 ERA in 19 outings, 7 starts.
That June, he spoke with The Eagle-Gazette about his progress. He was then just off his first start at Winter Haven, a complete-game loss where he only gave up three earned.
"I was a little nervous," Maloney told The Eagle-Gazette. "But I also thought to myself, 'Well, obviously they think I'm good enough, or they wouldn't put me out here."
Maloney returned to Winter Haven for all of 1992. He went 8-4, with a 3.69 ERA in 28 outings, 10 starts.
He then started 1993 at high-A Lynchburg, getting 18 relief outings. He then moved to the Expos and single-A Burlington. He saw 11 relief outings there to end his career.
