Jake Fowler hit ball well in college, saw one pro season

Jake Fowler had a successful spring trip for Southern Maine in 1990 and his coach Ed Flaherty noticed, according to The Lewiston Sun-Journal.

"His stats don't show it, but the guy who hit the ball the best for us was Fowler," Flaherty told The Sun-Journal that April.

Fowler went on from Southern Maine to turn pro. His pro career, however, proved brief. He saw a single season.

Fowler's career began and ended in 1990, signed by the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Maine.

Fowler signed as a junior, and after not having been drafted. He told The Portland Press-Herald he wanted to ensure he could go pro.

"I knew before the draft that I would take any offer," Fowler told The Press Herald. "I just felt that you only get one shot at pro ball, and I didn't want to get hurt in college in my senior year."

With the Red Sox, Fowler was assigned to the rookie Gulf Coast League. He saw 41 games and hit .178. That season proved his only time as a pro.
