Ed Glynn played in majors over decade with Mets, others
Brought up from AAA Tidewater the month before, Mets reliever Ed Glynn went on a run, saving four in 14 games, Newsday wrote.
Five of those outings came in consecutive games, Newsday wrote.
"This has been a real test for me," Glynn told Newsday that July. "I've never thrown that many days in a row."
Glynn went on to see 46 total outings that year for the Mets. He saw the majors over 10 seasons with four different clubs.
Glynn's career began in 1971, signed by the Tigers as an undrafted free agent out of Francis Lewis High School in Queens.
Glynn started with the Tigers at rookie Bristol and single-A Lakeland in 1972. He made AA Montgomery in 1974, then AAA Evansville and Detroit in 1975.
He saw three outings, one start with the Tigers in September 1975. He went 0-2, with a 4.30 ERA. He then returned for five outings, four starts in 1976.
Glynn threw a seven-inning no-hitter in July 1976. He looked around and saw others, including Mark Fidrych, having success, The Detroit Free Press wrote.
"I tell you, it makes me think a little about myself," Glynn told The Free Press. "I figure if he can do that, so could I. Of course, you have to get a break or two along the way."
Glynn then saw eight outings with the Tigers in 1977 and 10 more in 1978. He moved to the Mets for 1979 in a trade.
His 1979 season saw him get those 46 relief outings in the majors. He went 1-4, with seven saves and a 3.00 ERA.
Glynn saw another 38 relief outings with the Mets in 1980, then four with Cleveland in 1981 and 47 there in 1982.
Going into 1983, Glynn spoke to The Associated Press about his pitching style, pitching from the stretch, like he was always holding a runner on.
"Working from the stretch makes a tremendous difference for me," Glynn told The AP late that March. "It makes me more compact. I can get on top of my breaking ball and I have better control. Everything is technically more sound."
Glynn saw 11 more games with the Indians in 1983, then three final outings with the Expos in 1985. In late 1989, Glynn signed on with the senior league. Getting ready for his second season in late 1990, he played one game for AAA Tidewater that September to end his career.
