Darwin Davis had high hopes with Mets, 3 minors seasons
Kingsport Met Darwin Davis had high hopes for the 1991 season, he told The Kingsport Times-News.
After a good first season in the rookie Gulf Coast League, Davis looked to increase his RBIs, have a good fielding percentage and simply play hard, he told The Times-News.
"I push myself," Davis explained to The Times-News. "I set my goals high so I don't cheat myself."
No matter how hard he pushed himself, though. He ultimately was unable to make those high hopes a reality. His season with Kingsport proved his last.
Davis' career began in 1990, taken by the Mets in the fifth round of the draft out of Simeon High School in Chicago.
Davis started with the Mets in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He saw 30 games and hit .309. He also had two home runs and 13 RBI. His season included a game at rookie Kingsport. He went 0 for 4.
Davis moved to Kingsport full time for 1991. That August, he had a late run-scoring triple. Overall, he saw 53 games and hit .194, with 17 RBI to end his career.
Davis then settled in Indiana. In 2005, he was helping coach baseball at Bedford North Lawrence High School in Bedford.
"Understanding the game and coming out and giving it your all day in and day out is a learning process," Davis told The Bedford Times-Mail during a rough stretch, "and they're going through the struggles right now of trying to get that down."
