Scotty Williams played HS football, then pro baseball

Scotty Williams Morristown East High School team headed into the 1989 season and Williams drew confidence from his coach, according to The Bristol Herald Courier.

This was his football coach. Williams played quarterback, The Herald Courier wrote.

"The quarterback will be the key if he lives up to expectations," Morristown East coach Mac Lambert told The Herald Courier. "He's got a good arm."

Williams ended up showing a good enough arm in another sport, baseball, to turn pro. He saw two seasons, both in the rookie Gulf Coast League.

Williams' baseball career began in 1990, taken by the Mets in the 46th round of the draft out of Morristown East in Tennessee.

On the Morristown East baseball field, Williams was described by The Johnson City Press as a "hard-throwing righty." He also produced at the plate, hitting .350.

That April, he picked up the win in both sides of a double header. He also picked up four hits, one a home run.

With the Mets, Williams started in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He got into 15 games, starting one. He went 0-2, with a 2.73 ERA.

He then returned to the GCL for 1991. He went 2-0, with a 3.43 ERA in 11 outings, two starts. That season marked his last as a pro.
