Tommy Smith got big hit at Greensboro, saw 1 pro season

The Greensboro Hornets had a big inning in this August 1990 game - scoring 10 runs - and Tommy Smith helped them along with the biggest hit of the frame, a run-scoring double, The Greensboro News & Record wrote.

Smith went on to pick up another hit in six at bats on the night, scoring once, according to The News & Record.

Smith helped Greensboro in that game in his first season as a pro. It also proved to be his only season. He topped out there at single-A.

Smith's career began and ended that season, taken by the Yankees in the 42nd round of the draft out of the University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky. Smith was also credited as Tom Smith and Thomas Smith.

Smith played his season between Greensboro and the rookie Gulf Coast League. In the GCL, he saw nine games and hit .258.

He also saw 24 games at Greensboro. He picked up a two-run single in an early July game. He then singled and scored in an August game.

Smith hit .209 overall in 67 at bats for Greensboro to end his brief career.
