Brian Cummings' Durham Bulls took the 8-7 win this night in April 1990, thanks in part to the five shutout innings Cummings threw, The Durham Herald-Sun wrote.

Afterward, Cummings explained to The Herald-Sun his success on the night.

"I had a straight fastball, a good sinker and a slider," Cummings told The Herald-Sun. "I just went right at 'em. I had a really good sinker today. They never really hit it hard at all."

Cummings threw that outing to start his fourth pro season. That season also proved his last. He topped out at high-A.

Cummings' career began in 1987, taken by the Braves in the 16th round of the draft out of Blinn College in Texas.

Cummings started with the Braves at rookie Pulaski. He saw 14 starts and went 6-3, with a 3.16 ERA.

He moved to single-A Burlington for 1988 and went 5-14 on the year over 26 outings, 24 starts. He ended with a 5.05 ERA.

For 1989, he split time between Burlington and single-A co-op Peninsula. He went 4-14 that year, with a 5.72 ERA/

Cummings started 1990 at high-A Durham. He saw 14 outings, 13 starts and went 2-5, with a 5.40 ERA. He also saw seven relief outings at single-A Sumter that year. He gave up four earned in nine innings. That season proved his last as a pro.
