Bill Wengert improved at high-A Vero Beach; Saw eight pro seasons, made AAA

Bill Wengart picked up a complete game win in this August 1991 game, his seventh win of the year, The Indian River Press Journal.

His pitching coach Dennis Lewallyn could only praise Wengart's performance - and his progress, according to The Press Journal.

"As good as he was for us last year, he's a much better pitcher this year," Lewallyn told The Press Journal. "He's 7-5, but he deserves to have won 10 games."

Wengart gave that performance in his fourth season as a pro. He went on to see four more. He made AAA, but missed the bigs.

Wengart's career began in 1988, taken by the Dodgers in the 23rd round of the draft out of Iowa State University.

Wengart started with the Dodgers at rookie Great Falls. He went 3-3 over 14 outings, six starts. He then moved to single-A Bakersfield for 1989. He went 2-7 there over 21 outings, 15 starts, with a 4.73 ERA.

He made high-A Vero Beach in 1990. He went 5-1 there, over 22 outings, seven starts. He had a 3.86 ERA. He then returned to Vero Beach for 1991. He ended 7-6, with a 2.06 ERA in 30 outings, 13 starts.

His work in 1991, including his 114 strikeouts, then got him an early invite to spring training for 1992, The Press Journal wrote

"This has been the icing on the cake," Wengart told The Press Journal early that March. "I've always been the odd man out. So it makes me feel good to prove to a lot of people that I can pitch."

Wengart then played 1992 between Vero Beach and AA San Antonio. He saw 10 outings, seven starts at San Antonio and went 2-3, with a 3.22 ERA.

Wengart moved to the Padres system for 1993. He played that year and the next at AA Wichita. He had a 4.10 ERA his first year there and a 5.43 mark his second.

Wengart then saw his final time with the Red Sox in 1995 at AAA Pawtucket. He got into seven games in relief to end his career.
