Joe Tenhunfeld hit aggressively in college, then turned pro; Saw three seasons, made high-A

University of Cincinnati hitter Joe Tenhunfeld assessed his hitting style midway through his junior season in 1988, his hometown Akron Beacon Journal wrote.

"I've always been an aggressive hitter, but I think I've learned some patience this season," Tenhunfeld told The Beacon Journal that April. "I haven't cut down on my swing - I sill try to hit the ball as hard as I can - but I think I'm more selective now."

Whatever he did, Tenhunfeld improved enough to get selected in that year's draft. He went on to a pro career that spanned three seasons. He topped out at high-A.

Tenhunfeld's career began that year in 1988, taken by the Phillies in the 42nd round of the draft out of Cincinnati.

Tenhunfeld started with the Phillies at short-season Batavia. He got into 29 games and hit .153.

He moved to single-A Spartanburg in 1989. He saw 50 games there and hit .274. He homered and doubled in a July contest, then singled and scored in an August game.

Tenhunfeld arrived at high-A Clearwater for 1990. He saw 74 games there, but hit only .191. That season marked his last as a pro.
