Christmas Haul 2010

So right there is my Christmas haul.* My wife is so great. There are things I asked for and things I didn't there. *Not pictured: underwear and undershirts.
I asked for a couple boxes of cards, she got me that 1987 Donruss box and that 1986 Topps box. Both sets of cards I didn't collect as a kid, so it should be fun opening them up. I'll have to figure out how to handle them on the blog, though, because those could take awhile to get through one pack at a time.

I pointed out that baseball repack from Target. It's the same kind Night Owl picked up recently. My wife chose that particular one because it had a Cub on the front, Mark Grace.

At the center is a ticket stub album. She got it for me so we can hold all of our game stubs that we get. We've been to 35 different parks, by my count, 15 major league parks and 19 minor league parks.
Speaking of minor league parks, that bobblehead on the left is Champ, mascot of the Vermont Lake Monsters. I pointed out to my wife their holiday pack, which came with four ticket coupons and the bobblehead. So watch for that post in June or July or August.

Last year, I had her get me one from Batavia. That led to our June trip and two of my three interviews, Dann Bilardello and Roger LaFrancois, the manager and hitting coach for Batavia and CMC set members.

Also stadium related are those seats everything is sitting on. They're supposed to provide back support for bleachers. It's one of those things that's cool in the idea of it, but the next thing is you have to remember to bring them. We've had seat cushions for a couple years. I don't think we've ever remembered them.

The last things there are the drinking straw eyeglasses and Chasing 3000. The drinking straw eyeglasses we found at Target. They're really cool and freaky when sucking soda through. We actually got two pairs, I got her one and she got me one.

I'm really excited to see that Chasing 3000 movie. I hope it's good. It's a movie I've been wanting to see since 2006, when Ozzie Guillen wore a shirt promoting it during the All-Star pregame. But the movie never came out. I finally spotted it on Amazon a couple weeks ago and passed the link along to my wife.

The movie itself is about two brothers who traveled cross-country to see their favorite player Roberto Clemente get his 3,000th hit. Hopefully we'll get to watch it tonight.

By the way, I just realized there's a little bit of a Clemente theme here. He's the subject of the movie. But he's also the choice of Donruss for it's 1987 puzzle.

Brevard Community College's Kevin Rinaldi got the win in this March 1989 game, despite one of his weaknesses - the first inning, according to Florida Today . Rinaldi went six innings, giving up five runs in the process, but still got the 8-5 victory, Florida Today wrote . "If he ever gets out of the first inning, he usually does a good job," Brevard head coach Ernie Rosseau told Florida Today . "He just has trouble in that first inning." Read the March 2015 interview: Walter Roy, Gung-Ho The first couple roommates for Javier Lopez didn't work out . Then he moved in with Walter Roy , and another teammate. The group was rounded out by Roy's wife. The two were at rookie Pulaski that year and the move for Lopez forced the Puerto Rican-native out of his comfort zone, Lopez wrote years later in his book "Behind the Plate. " "I had to learn English living with them," Lopez wrote . "Walter's wife was there, too. She was a very sweet lady, and she talked to me all the time, taught me a lot." Lopez went on from there to a major league career that spanned 15 seasons. Roy's career ended the next year at single-A Burlington . Henry Mercedes moved past language problems to make bigs over five seasons

Henry Mercedes signed with the Athletics as a catcher out of his native Dominican Republic. He immediately ran into difficulties, according to The Associated Press . That's because the catcher Mercedes didn't know English, The AP wrote . "I wanted to return to my country," Mercedes told The AP in July 1996. "I think there are a lot of players that went through the same situation." Mercedes eventually got over those language issues. He also went on to a long career as a pro . That career included time in five major league seasons. Mercedes was originally signed by the Athletics in 1987. He first hit the field in the United States in 1988, playing in the rookie Arizona League. He made single-A Madison and Modesto in 1989. For 1990, he played most of the year at Madison. He played the rest, 12 games, at AAA Tacoma . He hit .224 overall on the year. He debuted in Oakland in April 1992. He got into nine games for Oakland, picking up four hits in f...
